Clearview PeeWee A Team Brings Home Gold and Silver in First Two Tourneys!
The Clearview IceCats PeeWee A team launched their season at the Oshawa Fall Classic tournament. Their first game of the season was played against a AA team from Saugeen-Maitland. The girls played hard, but hadn’t worked out all the kinks yet, and lost 2-0. From there things improved and the girls finished the rest of the round robin with three shutouts beating Durham West 3-0, Waterloo 5-0, and Barrie 3-0. Finishing second in their pool of seven teams, the girls would move on to the semi-finals and have to face the tough first place Cornwall team from the other pool. This game was back and forth, and the IceCats came out victorious with a score of 1-0. Off to the finals! The gold medal game was played against the Nepean Wildcats, a team who had knocked off the strong AA team from Saugeen. Our IceCats dominated the entire game, out-shooting the opponents 3 to 1, but had trouble getting the puck into the back of the net. At the end of regulation, the score was tied 2-2. Overtime brought more breathtaking moments for the IceCats, nearly scoring on shots off the cross bar and goalies stick, but to no avail. Time for the shootout, and our girls, tired from 6 long games and only two lines of players, just couldn’t find any more magic. A tough loss given the incredible game they played, and the girls had to settle for silver. Still an amazing start to the season for the team!
The second tournament took them to St. Catherine’s. In the first game the girls took on the home team Brock Jr. Badgers. Perhaps tired from the early morning long commute, the girls again struggled to find their game, but to the delight of the crowd the puck found the net with only 3.9 seconds left in the third. 1-0 victory for the good side! Game two was a bit easier with a 5-0 win over Aurora, and game three kept the girls undefeated beating Niagara 3-2. The IceCats drew Aurora again in the playoff round and were more than determined than ever to win. And win they did – 6 goals and another shutout for Clearview and a trip to the finals! Facing the home team again for the gold medal, this time the IceCats were well rested and came to play. Scoring 4 goals early in the game it seemed like a win was certain. But into the third period our girls got into a little penalty trouble and faced a 5 on 3 for two full minutes. The girls held them off as long as they could, but the Badgers managed to find the net twice. Penalties over and back to even strength, St. Catherine’s was no match for our IceCats and our team came away with a 4-2 victory and gold!
Congratulations to this amazing group of girls for their fantastic start to their season! They work hard together, believe in ‘TEAM FIRST’, and celebrate each other on and off the ice. They know that it takes teamwork to win and that no matter which stick touched the puck before it went in the net, every player had a role in getting it there. So proud of these young ladies and their true sense of what TEAM means! Way to go girls!
